Jeannie's Obsessions

Sabra Hummus and Stacy's Pita Chips
July 29, 2010
View Article

A few weeks ago I went with Brett to Cosco's and bought 16 individual tubs of my favorite snack Sabra hummus.

I can eat this snack all day everyday and never get tired of it.
I also love eating it with Stacy's Pita Chips.

I started eating hummus when I was in second grade and my family and I lived just outside D.C.

On the weekend we would venture to the Pentagon City Mall which was my first real taste of what an upscale mall looked like.

My parents would buy us an array of food which would always include hummus and pita chips.

It's a snack I am always obsessed about!

John warned me about buying a Cosco size snack saying "It ends up being a race against you and your snack. All you think about is if you can finish the whole thing off before it goes bad or gets stale."

He was right!

I ate those tubs and chips like it was my job.

I am happy to report that they are all gone!

Uncompensated Product Review: Sabra Hummus
http://subjectivesoup.blogspot.com/2010/07/uncompensated-product-review-sabra.html

I love Mediterranean food--such things as tabouleh, falafel, baba ganoush, and shish kabobs. A real favorite of mine is hummus. Restaurant hummus at most Mediterranean places is usually fantastic no matter how lowly the restaurant. Unfortunately, when I've tried to make my own hummus (grinding chick peas is how you start) it usually tastes like ground cardboard.

Now along comes Sabra hummus. I saw their commercial for this favorite Mediterranean treat of mine on television recently. I had never seen a commercial hummus advertised on television before so I decided I'd better try it. Sabra makes their hummus (it's sort of like a dip or a spread) in various flavors. I opted for the lovely spinach and artichoke version.

Here's what I think. Sabra Hummus is definitely better than any hummus I can make. It is not as good as hummus I've had in most middle eastern restaurants. I'm guessing that's because restaurant hummus is free of preservatives and is made fresh daily, whereas Sabra's version is not. Either way, it's hummus! So, if you crave that special delicacy you could do worse than sampling Sabra's.

If you try it, let me know what you think. And just to let you know, this review of Sabra Hummus is my own personal opinion for which I received absolutely no compensation (although, Sabra, I'd love to be your spokesperson, if you're listening.) One more thing--I noticed that Sabra's website is conducting a contest for a trip to Turkey--if you're interested.

Contest: Sabra Taste Intervention

There’s a national Taste Intervention contest taking place and Sabra Dipping Company is hoping to offer millions of people a chance to break free from their snacking and food ruts. Wouldn’t you like to win a trip to Turkey to attend culinary school or have Sabra’s chef Colombe Jacobson come to your home for one-on-one coaching?

Sabra wants to know your “food ruts” – like does the majority of your lunches consist of a ham sandwich or do you always snack on toast and jelly in the middle of the night? Whatever you’d like to share – Sabra (and I) would like to know.

As for me, I need to break from the wheat crackers and port wine cheese spread. As for my sweetie, he resorts to peanut butter and jelly on Saltine crackers. You can nominate yourself, friends or loved ones for the contest.

Questions:

1. What are your “food ruts” – snacks and foods you find yourself continuously eating….

2. Have you ever had Sabra hummus? What’s your favorite flavor?

Answer one or both of these questions for 5 extra entries into any of my current giveaways until July 30. Also, let Sabra hear your thoughts – tweet them your answer [@sabra] using #foodrut at the end. Further details about the Taste Intervention contest can be found here.

Good luck – I hope one of my readers win the contest!

Disclosure: I will receive coupons for free Sabra hummus in exchange for spreading the word about the Taste Intervention, which I will gladly accept because their hummus is delicious! I would never suggest something that I don’t eat myself!

Frugal Grace Giveaways

July 2010

Do you know someone who needs a “Taste Intervention” in the kitchen? (ok, I’ll admit, I DO!) I never liked hummus before – the brands I’ve tried in the past were grainy and frankly, tasted like cardboard. Recently, though, a friend recently introduced me to Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummus and I LOVE it. I scoop it up with pita chips and feel so much better about snacking healthy these days.

So I was thrilled to learn about the new contest and give-away that Sabra brands is hosting to inspire millions of Americans to expand their food horizons!

Nominate your favorite “foodie-to-be” and they could win Sabra Chef and Taste Intervention party kits or the Grand Prize - a 1 week journey to a Mediterranean cooking school!

Watch the Sabra Taste Intervention commercial, then enter to win – or nominate a worthy friend or family member who truly needs to expand their food horizons!

Exciting News!

I have REALLY exciting news that I have wanted to share with my readers since last week. Sadly, with all the work that has been done on my site I wasn’t able to post about it until now.

Some of my readers maybe have seen ads on TV or online for a new contest that Sabra is having called Sabra Taste Intervention. Here is the commercial just in case you haven’t seen it yet.

Sabra’s Taste Intervention contest encourages people to either nominate themselves or someone else who is in desperate need of “Taste Intervention”. You know you are in need of an intervention when you and your Chinese food delivery man are on a first name basis. Or when you call to order pizza and the man on the other end of the phone addresses you by name and says “The usual?”. And seriously, if you find yourself eating faux cheese from a can then that is the ultimate sign that you need to spice up your meals.

To enter all you need to do is visit the official website at http://www.sabra.com/sabraintervention.

There are two options found on the “Nominate” tab. One is to nominate a friend or loved one and the other is to nominate yourself. You can either submit your entry via e-mail or Facebook. Simply write why you (or a friend) is in great need of a “Taste Intervention” and then submit it. If you need some ideas you can browse the current entries found on the site. I have read at least half of them and some of them are pretty funny.

The contest is currently in full swing and ends on August 8, 2010.

You are also allowed to vote five times per day, one vote per person. If you and a few friends enter you could vote for each other.

The grand prize is a trip to Turkey for you and a friend where you will meet up with a Sabra chef and have a culinary adventure sure to awaken your taste buds. The winner will also experience private cooking classes as well as receive food and spices shipped directly to their own so that you can create gourmet masterpieces when you return from your trip.

Second prize consists of a chef coming to your home and prepare an amazing dinner for your family and guests.

Third prize is a Sabra Taste Intervention kit complete with coupons, spices and more.

WHY is this such exciting news you might ask? It’s exciting because there are five nation wide judges final judges and I’m one of them. How COOL is that?

The first round of judging is done by popular vote (whomever gets the most votes from site visitors). The final round of voting goes to the five judges, one of which is yours truly. Move over Judge Judy… make way for Judge Kimberly! LOL!

It is such an honor to be asked to be a judge. I’m going to be included in official press releases and everything. I ♥ it!

To learn more about the contest please visit http://www.sabra.com/sabraintervention. You can also learn more about Sabar products at http://www.Sabra.com.

Sabra has offered to give THREE lucky She Scribes readers some Sabra “swag” to get you excited about the contest and to help give you a bit of a “Taste Intervention”. The prize consists of coupons for FREE Sabra products, a t-shirt and a recipe booklet.

To enter please comment on why you (or someone you know) needs a “Taste Intervention”. While you are leaving a comment here please submit it to the official Taste Intervention website and be entered to win the grand prize or one of the other prizes.

For extra entries you can do any or all of the following. Please leave a separate comment for each that you have done.

- Follow She Scribes on Twitter (@She_Scribes) and Sabra (@Sabra) and tweet to @Sabra why you are in a food rut. Please include the hashtag #foodrut. Here is an example…

@Sabra I’m in a food rut because I eat Ramen Noodles everyday @She_Scribes #foodrut

This giveaway is open to US residents and will end on August 1, 2010 at 11:59 PM (EST). The winners will be chosen at random using a random number generator from all eligible entries. The winners will be contacted by e-mail and will have three days to reply with a name and mailing address (no PO Box) or a new winner will be chosen.

Other great giveaways are found under “Win It” on the right side bar.

Hummus-stuffed chicken breasts

Serves 4

1/2 cup hummus

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 cup all-purpose flour

4 large eggs, egg whites only

1 tablespoon water

1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs or Panko

Salt and pepper to taste

1/4 cup olive oil

Place chicken in a large plastic bag and pound until 1/4 inch thick, about 8 inches long and 6 inches wide.

Lay the chicken breasts smooth side down and season with salt and pepper. Spread about 2 tablespoons of hummus on the chicken, leaving a 1/2-inch border all around.

Roll each chicken breast and wrap in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Twist the ends like a candy wrapper and chill in the refrigerator for 45 minutes.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Using three shallow dishes, pour the flour in one, lightly whisk the egg whites and water in the second and place the breadcrumbs in the third. Unwrap the chicken breasts and, using tongs, roll in the flour, submerge in the egg whites, and then place in the breadcrumbs, using your fingers to press the breadcrumbs so they stick.

Heat 1/4 cup olive oil in a large nonstick skillet until shimmering (about 4 minutes). Place the rolled chicken breasts in the oil, seam side down. Cook until golden, about 2 minutes on all sides. Put the chicken breasts (seam side down) in a baking dish and cook in an oven for about 15 minutes or until thermometer registers 160 degrees. Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes.
